The rapid development and deployment of new and emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has far outpaced society’s ability to understand its implications, and the government’s ability to regulate these tools to prevent harm. AI has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives: the content we see, our medical care, our access to justice, our ability to get a loan or buy a house, our jobs, our education. Exacerbated by the release of ChatGPT, the common thread and narrative across all conversations on AI is that—whether one believes AI will lead to human extinction or help us solve our most pressing problems—it is inevitable. But AI is not in the driver’s seat, people are. This panel with leading public interest technologists discussion will center communities in the conversation about AI and go beyond AI hype and doomism to explore an alternative future: one rooted in wellbeing, ethics, and justice. *Brian Watt* (Moderator), KQED Morning News Anchor. *Dr. Safiya Noble* is an internet studies scholar and the David O. She is the author of a best-selling book on racist and sexist algorithmic bias in commercial search engines, entitled Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism. *Dr. Latanya Sweeney* is the Daniel Paul Professor of the Practice of Government and Technology at the Harvard Kennedy School and the director and founder of Harvard’s Public Interest Tech Lab. Why does a widely-used internet search engine deliver results that can be blatantly racist and sexist? "Beyond the Search" tells the story of two leading information researchers who made shocking discoveries about hidden biases in the search technology we rely on every day. It begins when Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble set out to find activities to entertain her young nieces and entered the term “Black girls’’ into her search bar: pages of pornography appeared as the top results. Subsequent searches of “Latina girls” and “Asian girls” led to similarly sexualizing and racist results. Concerned about the effect of such dangerous stereotypes, Noble embarked on research that would lead to her groundbreaking book, ‘Algorithms of Oppression.’ Along the way, she discovered the work of another prominent Black researcher, computer scientist Dr. Latanya Sweeney, who had made her own disturbing discovery: When she searched her own name, she got online ads for access to an arrest record. As Sweeney had never been arrested, she began investigating discrimination in online ad delivery. Her findings astounded her: Searching a name more commonly given to Black children was 25% more likely to deliver an ad suggestive of an arrest record. In this episode of Hip-Hop and the Metaverse we meet independent artist Vritra, former member of Hip-Hop collective Odd Future, as he tests out AI programs for a new song. He collaborates with computer scientist and musician Micah Brown, who has developed BrainRap an assistive AI platform, which listens to an artist freestyling, singing or writing and suggests words and phrases in real-time. Our host, Dr. Taj Frazier explores the benefits and potential pitfalls of these new technologies alongside experts in the field that shine a light on the biases and human flaws machine learning algorithms can carry.
